Member Spotlight

Brenda Blackmon, RN, CCM

Current Employment: Transitional Learning Center of Galveston
Position:   Business Development Team Member
Brenda writes, “As part of the business development team, I help in informing our community and surrounding counties of the post-acute brain injury rehabilitation program offered in Galveston. I am fortunate enough to be able to attend most conferences and seminars to help educate medical providers. When we are given a referral, I will travel to meet with the client, the family, and health care team to screen the client for appropriate placement in our facility. Each week the team has a meeting to review the outcomes and progress of the client. I get to see an individual complete his rehabilitation program and meet with them during the stay in Galveston. This is one of the most rewarding jobs that I will ever obtain and am grateful every day for this opportunity.”

Hobbies, Special Interests:

Previous Experience:

While I attended nursing school, I had the opportunity to take care of my Dad after his open heart surgery, and my father-in-law with a lung disease. My mother-in-law lived with me after a 360 degree cervical fusion. After graduation, I was asked to apply for a rehabilitation consultant position in a case management firm. They hired me on the spot due to the experience working so closely with my family members. For the last ten years I have performed case management services for various insurances, mostly with worker’s compensation. I also had to rehabilitate after brain surgery two years ago. Rehabilitation is not for sissy’s!!

I love what I do, and feel that this has been an ongoing series of rehabilitation experiences to build on to help others deal with the life changing circumstances that we are dealt. My Mother sent me to stay with my Grandmother after surgery when I was five years old. Rehabilitation has always been in my blood.

What does Rehabilitation Nursing means to me:
I feel very uplifted after a client has worked, and kept on working, until goals are reached and more independence has been obtained. When I see the smile of a client after that first goal is reached, or progress was made so easily, that is worth so much to me. I want to continue in this field until I can’t go anymore!
