What does Rehabilitation Nursing means to me: Teaching and Caring
Chi writes: “I started my nursing career in a surgical unit. I did more of pre/post-op care. I went home each day mentally tired; there was no job satisfaction, so something was missing. The frustration came from not being able to interact with my patient/family, educate and monitor their progress. The surgical unit did not give me that opportunity. The patients come in too anxious to listen; after surgery they are in a great deal of pain and will not pay attention to you. By the time they are ready for teaching, they are discharged.

In rehabilitation, patients and families are ready. Rehabilitation is an ongoing process, therefore patient/family teaching continues until the patient reaches his/her optimum level. For patient teaching to be effective, we need to look at his/her physical, emotional, psychological and social needs. I guess I was born to be a nurse and a teacher, so rehabilitation nursing offers me both positions.

As I love pictures, UTMB used my picture in their employment brochure titled, “Professionalism and You”.
