Hobbies, Special Interests: |
| Maricar writes, “Apart from
work, I do have another love…the love for hula and the Hawaiian
culture. I study the hula dance and am part of a hula halau. Our
group recently competed in the Merrie Monarch Festival in April
2006. We represented the state of Texas; the experience was
memorable!!” |

Previous
Experience: |
|
“I have worked in rehabilitation since my
arrival to Houston (from Toronto, Canada) in 1997. Initially, I came
to Houston without rehabilitation experience; I had medical-surgical
experience only. I became fascinated and enthusiastic about learning
all I could about rehabilitation. Rehabilitation nursing is truly a
nursing specialty! No other nursing specialty is like
rehabilitation!
I worked as a staff nurse from 1997-2001 caring for all types of
rehabilitation patients. In 2002, I changed positions from staff
nurse to the Prospective Payment System (PPS) Coordinator.
Throughout the years, I have learned much about the PPS, 75% rule,
the importance of FIM scoring, etc.
Along with the PPS responsibility, I am also the Clinical Mentor on
the unit which allowed me the opportunity to continue to learn more
about rehabilitation and to educate not only myself, but my nursing
colleagues as well.” |

What does Rehabilitation Nursing means to me: |
Knowing That I Have Made
a Difference
“I had only been working in Houston on the rehabilitation floor for
one month when I heard the news of my father (in Canada) having a
CVA. I had little experience with CVAs back then and wanted to give
my family
information that they could use, but was unable due to my limited
experience. It was then that I realized that I
was going to make rehabilitation my nursing specialty and that I
would do everything in my power to learn everything I could about
CVAs for myself and my family. I enjoyed working with individuals
with CVAs the most because it reminded me of my father; helping them
was like helping my father. It is very rewarding to see patients
make such a significant change in the time they are with us on the
rehabilitation unit. The smiles that
our patients give us daily after a hard day’s work in rehabilitation
is what I enjoy most; knowing that I have
made a difference in my patient’s life is what matters most to me!!
One more thing that I love about rehabilitation nursing is the
teamwork that is displayed on our unit! Our interdisciplinary team
shows exemplary team effort towards achieving patient outcomes as
well as support for each other. My rehabilitation colleagues are my
family at TMH!! |

“I wrote this reflection in
September, 2005:
I Remember
Another day has begun
Here I am
Again
Hurrying back and forth
From room to room
Patient to patient
Task after task
Assessing and planning the day…day after day
People everywhere I go-
Everywhere I turn, everywhere I look
Doctors, therapists, dietitians, the unit secretary, nursing staff,
housekeeping
Tell me again, “Why I am here?”
Yes, I remember…
I’m here…
I’m here because I want to be here
With you, taking care of you,
Planning for and planning with you
Setting goals.
I’m here for all the accomplishments you make while you are under MY
care…
No matter how small or large…
I AM PROUD OF YOU.
I see the change in you…
I see YOU.
We talk
We laugh
We cry
It doesn’t matter what we do, because we do it together…
You are not alone here
We plan again for the next day
Another day has ended
Tomorrow is a new day,
A new beginning
For you and I.
