Member Spotlight

Wendy Healy, BSN, RN

New Member Southeast Texas Chapter ARN 2003

Welcome!

Current Employment:            Memorial Hermann Hospital

The Assessment Center, Outpatient Rehabilitation Clinic

Position:                                  Clinic Nurse

Description of Responsibilities:       Wendy states that she is the Clinic Nurse, and “jack of all trades”.  She orders supplies, schedules patients, directs physicians as to what to do, where to go and when.    The Outpatient Rehabilitation Clinic is a small clinic at Hermann, (“although we are trying to make our numbers grow.”)  Wendy loves this small clinic because she gets to know most of her patients by name.  They call her when they have questions or problems, or accomplishments they want to share.  It is an “old time” clinic; Wendy has voice mail, but is able to talk to her patients when they call. It is not an impersonal phone system, where “if you want to make an appointment press 1, if you need a refill press 2, if you wish to speak to a nurse press 3.….”

ARN Member Since:   Wendy states that she was fortunate enough to attend the National educational conference in Kansas in 2002, and has been a member since then.

SETX Chapter ARN Involvement:            Member since March, 2003

                                                                           Membership Committee 2003- Present

Why did you decide to join SETX ARN?

One meeting made me realize the wealth of information that I could obtain from the speakers as well as the networking that goes on at the meetings.

Previous Experience:  Wendy started her career as a neonate ICU nurse and realized how important life really was from our very beginning in this world.  Over the last 25 years, she has moved in and out of the pediatric world of nursing.  “I always thought that I loved children, but after working with the patients and my wonderful physicians at the Assessment Center, I found that I just like being able to help people that need and appreciate the help.”  Wendy says that patients don’t always appreciate the help the first time, come around.  She likes that best.

What does Rehabilitation Nursing mean to you?  Wendy states, “ Rehabilitation nursing to me means encouraging people to obtain goals that are within their reach with hard work and motivation.  I enjoy watching patients improve and watching the patients reaction to their accomplishments.  My physicians give Botox to patients to improve their spasticity; I love watching my patients be able to move fingers and hands that have not worked in long periods of time.”
